Warmth in a Bowl: The Story Behind The Mellow Grove

Warmth in a Bowl: The Story Behind The Mellow Grove

There is a particular quality to afternoon light in a grove of trees in late spring. It arrives in columns through the canopy, warm and golden, turning the air itself amber. The ground underneath smells of bark and sap, of something faintly sweet. Time slows down. You breathe differently. That feeling is what we were chasing when we made The Mellow Grove.

The Inspiration

Not all spring fragrances are bright and fresh. Spring contains multitudes: the crisp, clean mornings of March; the explosive floral energy of April; but also the slower, warmer afternoons of May, when the trees are fully in leaf and the season tips towards something more settled and golden.

The Mellow Grove was inspired by those later spring days - the ones that feel almost like summer, when the urgency of new growth gives way to a more comfortable abundance. A grove in this moment is a quiet, deeply pleasant place: warm, enclosed, rich with the smell of wood and earth and something faintly sweet drifting through the air.

We wanted to capture that feeling of pleasurable stillness. Not excitement, not freshness, but something deeper: the kind of contentment that comes from being somewhere beautiful with nowhere else to be.

The Fragrance

The Mellow Grove opens gently, with a warm amber note that settles the room immediately. There is no sharp opening here, no burst of citrus or bright green leaf - this fragrance arrives the way afternoon light does, gradually and without announcement.

The heart is built around rich vanilla and warm walnut, two notes that work together in a way that is surprisingly nuanced. Vanilla alone can veer into sweetness; walnut alone can become dry and woody. Together, with a golden floral note threaded through - the faintest suggestion of a late-spring wildflower seen from a distance - they create something that is warm and comforting without ever being cloying.

The base is deep and lasting: amber, soft woods, and a whisper of warm musk that anchors the fragrance and keeps it present long after the candle has been extinguished. The Mellow Grove is the scent that lingers in the room when you come back to it the next morning - a pleasant, familiar warmth that makes the space feel lived-in and loved.

This is a fragrance built for people who appreciate subtlety. It does not announce itself. It simply makes everything around it feel better.

Why We Made This Fragrance

In developing our spring collection, we knew we wanted to cover the full emotional range of the season. Spring Clearing for fresh beginnings, The Blackberry Hedgerow for wild beauty, Letters Never Sent for romantic depth. But we also wanted something that addressed a feeling we hear about often from our customers: the need for comfort that does not feel like retreat.

The Mellow Grove is not a winter candle. It does not warm by necessity, the way a spiced or smoky candle might. It warms by disposition - it is simply a fragrance that feels good to be near, at any time of day, in any kind of weather. We designed it to be the candle you reach for when you want to feel settled without wanting to feel heavy.

It is also a more unusual choice in the spring landscape, where most fragrances compete to be the freshest, the brightest, the most uplifting. The Mellow Grove does not compete at all. It occupies its own quieter category, and does so with complete confidence.

The Candle

The Mellow Grove is hand-poured into a sustainably sourced wooden container, set with dried botanicals chosen to echo the fragrance: a golden marigold at the centre, elegant composition that looks as considered as a still life.

The soy wax is  natural, phthalate-free, and biodegradable. The fragrance materials are ethically sourced and free from harmful chemicals. The bowl, as always, is designed to outlast the candle and become a permanent, beautiful part of your home.

This is a candle that photographs beautifully, burns beautifully, and makes any room feel more considered. It is a quiet luxury - the kind you reach for again and again.

The Perfect Pairing

The Mellow Grove works particularly well as an evening candle, lit after dinner when the energy of the day has passed and you want the room to settle into something warm and unhurried. It pairs naturally with Letters Never Sent - light The Mellow Grove first, let the room fill with its golden warmth, then let Letters Never Sent add a romantic, floral softness to the evening as the hours pass.

It also makes a thoughtful gift: distinctive, high quality, and suitable for almost anyone - the kind of candle that feels considered rather than generic.
