- The candle wasn’t burned for long enough during the first burn. If the wax doesn’t melt all the way to the edge of the container, future burns tend to follow the same, smaller path, creating a tunnel.
- The wick is too small for the candle’s diameter, meaning it doesn’t generate enough heat to melt the entire surface of the candle.

How to Prevent Tunnelling
Let the First Burn Count
The first burn is the most important. Allow the wax to melt across the entire surface before extinguishing the flame. This doesn’t take a set amount of time – the surface of a large candle needs much longer to burn than a small candle – just keep an eye to ensure the wax is evenly burnt.
Burn for the Right Amount of Time
Try to burn your candle for an appropriate amount of time every use – not just the first. Burn your candle until the wax melts across the whole surface but avoid keeping it lit for longer than 3 hours to maintain good shape.
Keep the Wick Trimmed
A wick that’s too long or leaning to one side can cause uneven burning. Keep the wick trimmed to ¼” and avoid burning the wick beyond ½” of the wax pool to ensure a steady and even flame.
Extinguish Carefully
The smoke from blowing your candle out may damage the wick, increasing the risk of tunnelling. Invest in a candle snuffer to keep the wick in good shape.
Store Candles Correctly
Placing your candles in direct sunlight can affect the wax, risking tunnelling. Draughts may also blow the flame in one direction, causing uneven burning. For the best results, burn your candles in a cool, dry place.
